Digital Cameras

The vote is officially in. Digital cameras have taken the photography world by storm on both the professional and the amateur level. Briefly thought of as an undesirable alternative to “real” film cameras, digital cameras are now some of the most sophisticated pieces of photographic equipment on the market today.

Digital cameras work essentially by translating an electronically captured image into a digital format. This digitized image is then able to be transferred and manipulated in a variety of ways that normal film photos simply could not. One of the main attractions to digital cameras–for both professionals and amateurs alike–is the ability to take a number of photos and then manipulate them without ever having to develop them. This saves both time and money, and allows photographers to only print the pictures they really want.

There are two basic types or styles of digital cameras which correlate to the two basic styles of film-based cameras. There are the standard or “compact” style digital cameras, and the single lens reflex style digital cameras. Compact digital cameras are the simple to use, easy to carry “point-and-shoot” style models. They are a great option for those who simply want to take simple photographs of family and places visited, and who do not want to fool around with various lenses and extraneous equipment. Kodak’s Easy Share line of cameras is a good example of this style of digital camera.

For those who want a more professional-style digital camera, there are now single lens reflex digital cameras. These digital cameras look more like traditional cameras insofar as they have a detachable camera body. More and more camera manufacturers are coming out with SLR-style digital cameras that appeal to both professionals and serious photography enthusiasts. Canon’s EOX Rebel XT and Nikon’s D2HS are both excellent examples of high-end digital SLR style cameras.
